SSR Meeting Minutes (2002-11-05)

  1. Members Robert Abernathy, Mark Bottjer, Camille Scielzi, Debbie Dennis, Fred Yarger, Eric Pearce, Addy Bhasker, Cathy Perini, and Matt Perini were present.

  2. Matt announced that Robert Abernathy was named as interim Vice President following the resignation of Liz Alvarez late last summer. Also, Cathy Perini will be resigning her position as Secretary/Treasurer at the end of this calendar year. All officers are elected at the January meeting.

  3. Mark Bottjer started a discussion of what to do for next year's Fat Tire Fiesta, that is, how much advertising should be done, where, and how much benefit will the event receive? This year's event was very profitable, and the members present were asked to think about how that money may be put toward items the club needs to promote events, such as canopies, water jugs, and timing equipment.

  4. Matt and Mark will be attending the annual NM/TX American Cycling Association (ACA) meeting in Albuquerque this weekend. This meeting is also a scheduling meeting for the 2003 season; due to lack of an organizer, SSR is not promoting the San Marcial Time Trial in 2003, however, the Fat Tire Fiesta is set for September 20-21.

  5. Matt announced that SSR has donated $100 toward materials being used to construct the "extreme mountain biking" arena at New Mexico Tech. Brad Cromey and member Nathan Heronen are building this arena just west of the Tech greenhouse (near the golf course), and they invite any interested person to visit.

  6. The Fall Running Series will continue on Sunday, the 10th, with a 10K handicap-format race. This race meet at the Tech pool parking lot. (This replaces the regular Sunday run this weekend.)

  7. The SSR end-of-year party will be held after the third Fall Running Series race, on Sunday, December 8th. This race is a point-to-point 15K from San Marcial to the Bosque del Apache. The party will be at Matt and Cathy's near San Antonio, at approximately 6PM.

  8. A suggestion to schedule the next Hwy 60 clean up day was tabled until the January meeting.

  9. Mark, Robert, and Matt are continuing their efforts to have New Mexico Tech adopt the singletrack course as an official recreation area. Currently, they are working on producing an accurate map that shows EMRTC sites and the singletrack. This map will be used to prove that the singletrack lies outside the restricted radius around EMRTC test sites. The suggestion for scheduling a singletrack maintenance day was postponed until the singletrack is totally legitimate.

  10. Fourteen club members voted on the four jersey designs, and the "Sunburst" design won the most votes. The "Sand & Blue" design was a close second. Matt will begin the process of producing a full design and finding a production company.

  11. Matt and Cathy have been approached by Jackie Kraft of the Animal Protective Association of Socorro (APAS) about helping them with a fundraising event. The members present suggested a 5K run and walk in the February/March timeframe, focusing mainly on local participation. A motion to work with APAS to plan this event was made and adopted by the members present.

  12. Fred pointed out that the American Cancer Society allows Relay for Life teams to collect money throughout the year. Several suggestions were made for possible fundraising events, including a car wash and a swim-a-thon. Since the San Marcial Time Trial was cancelled for 2003, another major fundraiser is needed to take its place.

  13. Debbie raised the topic of a new year-round pool in Socorro, which was originally brought up at the September meeting. Matt has spoken to Glenda Chavez, the grant writer for the Southwest Council of Governments, about the possibility of obtaining grants for the construction and operation of a year-round pool. Ms. Chavez says that it is possible, however, New Mexico Tech may be better able to afford it. Debbie reported that New Mexico Tech may already have plans for a new pool, however, the details are not known at this time.

  14. The December meeting will be the party on December 8th at Matt and Cathy's.
