Considerations before adopting an animal
- Owning a pet can be a long-term commitment as some animals can live 15-20 years. Are you prepared to care for your pet for its liftetime?
- Pets need attention and exercise. Are you able to make time in your daily schedule for your new pet?
- Does everyone in the household agree to a pet?
- Are there any pet allergies?
- Do you rent or own your home? If you rent, does your landlord/management company allow pets?
- A pet requires financial considerations. You will need to provide medical care, food, dishes and/or collars, leashes, litter and scratching posts for your pet. Are you able to support your new pet financially?
- Pets are not perfect (neither are humans, for that matter). New pets, especially, need time to learn the ropes in their new home. Are you prepared to be patient and help train your new pet?
Adoption
procedures
1)
Prepare for your new pet. Before coming to select a
dog
or cat, consider how you will get it home safely. Do you have
a
box or carrier to transport your cat home, or a leash and collar for
your new dog? If you're adopting a cat, have a
litter box and litter ready at home. And, of course, for both
cats and dogs, they will need bowls for food and water.2) Come into the shelter and find your lucky new pet (the easy part).
3) Complete the application and pay the sterilization deposit (see sterilization fees below). The City of Socorro takes cash or checks, but no credit cards at the current time.
4) If your new pet needs to be sterilized, an appointment will be made at one of the two veterinary clinics in town. Before your pet goes home, he/she will be transported to the clinic by a Socorro Animal Shelter employee, and you will be able to pick-up your pet at the clinic after the procedure.
5) If your new pet is too young for sterilization procedures, you will be able to take your animal home with you after paying the sterilization deposit. When the animal is old enough to be spayed/neutered, you will arrange the appointment with your local veterinarian.
6)
Play with and enjoy your new family
member.
Fees
The sterilization deposit includes a one-year rabies vaccination ($10 value) and the remainder is applied towards the veterinary fee for sterilization. Animals in heat or pregnant can cost from $25-$30 more. Prices may vary slightly depending on veterinary clinic prices. While funds allow, APAS gives a $50 voucher for each new cat and dog adopted at the shelter to be applied towards your new pet's vet bill.
Cat Sterilization (male) $60Cat Sterilization (female) $80
Dog Sterilization (male) $90Dog Sterilization (female) $100
Previously sterilized animals are $50 plus $10 rabies vaccination, unless current records are available to verify innoculation. Most animals that come to the City of Socorro Animal Shelter are strays, meaning they've been picked-up off the streets with no identification, or they've been left by persons in the drop-off cage outside the shelter. We typically have no history or veterinary records for our adoptable animals. Therefore, the City of Socorro Animal Shelter cannot guarantee the health or temperment of any adopted pet. As a new pet owner, it is your responsibility (and we strongly enourage you) to take your new pet to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible for a health evaluation.
