The Eaton House - 1881

Immerse yourself in the enchantment of New Mexico. The Eaton House has it all, vigas, latillas, fireplaces, history, gardens, portales for outdoor living and a modern kitchen with a huge pantry. This 7 bedroom, 7 bath Territorial Adobe is on the New Mexico State Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1881 by mine and smelter owner, rancher, and head of Committee of Justice (Vigilantes), and Civil War officer, Col. Ethan W. Eaton, the Eaton House stands today as a monument to the ‘boomtime’ of silver, gold and lead mining

Indoors you’ll love living and entertaining in the modern kitchen, and under the high ceilings, of this bright and airy home. Your guests will never forget the luxurious casitas.

Outdoors you will relax in comfort while viewing birds and flowers in the professional landscaping. The wide portales were designed, and the native plants selected, by bird lovers.

To stay at the Eaton House

The home is surrounded by professionally landscaped gardens. In the orchard there are Apple, Peach, Pomegranate and Cherry trees. Fruiting Mulberries and a dead Apricot tree provide food and roosts for birds.

Orioles, Hummingbirds, King Birds, Robins and Grosbeaks are resident in spring and summer.

Log columns support the entrance portico.
A six foot adobe and cement block wall defines the property on 3 sides.
The Zaguan hall separates the private from the public areas of the home. The original oak floors were recently refinished.
The Kiva room connects the Zaguan with the master bedroom. The Kiva is a pleasant sitting room with cottonwood vigas and latillas over a wood burning fireplace. Windows on two walls illuminate the room and provide a view of the patio butterfly garden.

The master bedroom suite's high ceiling is supported by massive vigas with woven latillas. The bathrooms at either end contain separate closets with lots of built ins. The door on the far wall enters a small room that is plumbed for a washer dryer.

The floor of the South bathroom is tiled. The vigas and latillas match those of the bedroom.

The same custom closet style is used in the North bath .
Master bedroom has separate entrance, porch and patio.
The bedroom/office at the end of the Zaguan has it's own entry hall and wood burning fireplace. Surrounded on two sides by windows, this room is a favorite of the owners.
At present the room is a library.
The petite claw foot tub has antique brass fixtures.
The pedestal sink is accented by ceramic sconces that match the hall chandelier.
At the West end of the Zaguan there are three features: a period bath, a short hall and bedroom/office, and the entrance to the stone lined cellar. The entrance to the cellar is a trap door that is lifted by rope and counter weights. The weights are a section of railroad tie and a plate of silver ore.

The unit that divides the living room from the dining room was brought in by railroad in the 1920s. The unit, complete with leaded glass, lists for $37.50 in contemporary catalogues.
High ceiling is evident in this photograph of the formal dining room. Notice the transom above the door with hardware for remote operation.
In 1906 there was an earthquake in Socorro. To protect his home from future shakes, Col. Eaton erected vertical beams, ran rods between the walls and secured them with large star washers. These washers have become the identifying feature of the Eatonhouse.
The adobe walls are over 18" thick.
Engraved tile back splash holds the convenient pot filler. The stove top has 5 burners with 18500 btu and simmer features.
Both undercounter and hanging lamps brighten the kitchen.
Plenty of counter space and dual ovens for activities like bread making. There's a glimpse of the pantry through the door.
The adjacent pantry has ample space for supplies, equipment, refrigerator and freezer.
Raised beds provide vegetables at the kitchen door.
The hall into the laundry room houses a water heater, room heater and evaporative cooler. There is storage space on the left. The laundry accomodates modern equipment with room to spare.
The Daughters room is presently utilized as a working office.
The Col. Eaton is now a spacious sewing room.
The room names are from the time when the Eaton House was one of New Mexicos premier Bed and Breakfast Inns. This is the Vigilante Room.
The full bath has a Talavera tile sink.

The well (for landscaping) is housed under the floor of the pump house. The building is used as a shop and for storage.

The brick portale is the social area. Whether watching the hummingbirds at the feeders or relaxing in the breeze, it's the place to be.

Four species of hummingbirds visit the Eaton House between April and September. Blackchins are the first to arrive followed by rufous in July. Caliopes join in late July and early August. broadtails, common at higher elevations, are occaisional visitors here. Early August is the peak.

There have been as many as a thousand hummingbirds a day during peak migration. The owners no longer encourage that many birds as they required as much as 5 gallons of hummingbird food a day.

Primroses border the portale.
